Props to Vertonghen for recognizing he couldn’t continue. You never know with head injuries, and it looked especially scary towards the end.

Spurs' medical staff sent Vertonghen back out on to play moments before he exited the pitch, vomited and collapsed. This despite the referee asking them to check for concussion. The culture of patching head-injured players up and sending them on is irresponsible. #TOTAJX

Referee had doubts before allowing Vertonghen to continue. Spurs medics gave it the thumbs up. Vertonghen had to come off shortly afterwards. Surely it's time for independent doctors to decide if a player can carry on.

They’ll say medical protocols were followed, but it’s incredible that Vertonghen wasn’t withdrawn on the spot. The state he was in...

Vertonghen under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should have been allowed to come back onto the field.....DISGUSTING PATHETIC demonstration from @SpursOfficial medical staff! #UCL

Relieved Vertonghen realised so quickly that he couldn't stay on, but amazed - given how he looked as he went off - that a few seconds before everyone decided that yeah, it'd probably be fine, actually.

No medical expert but reckon there's enough of a clue here that Vertonghen probably wasn't fit enough to carry on playing pic.twitter.com/pWzxuoy7iV

Commentators: Vertonghen doesn’t look good

Refs: Yeah he doesn’t look too good
