Hopp hefur legið undir mikilli gagnrýni frá stuðningsmönnum annarra félaga í þýsku deildinni. Hann er sagður hafa keypt Hoffenheim upp í efstu deild, enda dældi hann miklum pening í félagið til að koma því á þann stað sem það er á í dag.
